Not investment advice
Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell anything. carbonthat is not a broker-dealer, not an investment adviser, and not registered with any financial regulator. No one here knows your circumstances, and nothing on this site is tailored to them.
A congressional disclosure records that a trade happened. It is not a prediction that it was a good one, and members lose money like everyone else.
What a disclosure actually tells you
- Amounts are ranges, not figures. The law requires a bracket — $1,001–$15,000, and so on. Every "estimated volume" on this site is built from those brackets and is an approximation by construction.
- Filings are late by design. The STOCK Act allows up to 45 days. What you are reading already happened, and the price has already moved.
- Not every trade appears. Reporting thresholds, asset types outside the rules, and filings we could not parse all leave gaps. An empty page means we have no filing, not that no trade occurred.
- Many trades are not the member's. Spouse and dependent-child transactions are reported too, and are labelled where the filing says so.
- Documents are read by machine. Filings arrive as PDFs, some of them scans. Parsing and name matching both produce errors. Where a figure matters, check it against the original filing — and tell us what you found.
Why simulated returns run high
The simulator answers one narrow question: if you had seen a filing the day it was published, bought at that day's close, and still held it, where would you be? That is all it computes.
It does not model:
- the member's own exit — they may have sold long ago;
- position sizing, or what the rest of a portfolio was doing;
- dividends, fees, commissions, spreads, or taxes;
- any filing whose asset has no price series.
Every one of those omissions pushes the result in the same direction. A simulated return here should be read as an optimistic upper bound — the best case, not the expected one.
Past performance does not indicate future results, and a hypothetical result is not even past performance.
No affiliation
carbonthat is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the United States Congress, the Clerk of the House, the Secretary of the Senate, or any government agency. Members named on this site are public officials named in public records; nothing here implies wrongdoing by any of them. Trading while in office is legal, and disclosure is what the law requires.
